Okay. So.

Doc Scratch's death is necessary for Lord English's entry into a universe. Even if the Green Sun is not destroyed, he'll die some other way and English will manifest. Scratch is reborn into every universe in which English will eventually arrive, and in each he will eventually die, bringing about English's entry.

English's arrival dooms a universe to eradication.

Spades Slick wants to kill Lord English. He was very precise about that during the Intermission - the whole Felt was going down, but he was going to handle English personally.

Spades Slick = anti-hero???
